Opera Resources

  • Karajan Center Non-JC Link:  The conductor, Herbert von Karajan, engaged José Carreras in 1976 to sing the tenor part in Verdi's Requiem at the Salzburg Easter Festival, and their artistic and personal relationship lasted over 12 seasons, performing and recording together in Salzburg, Vienna, Lucerne and Berlin. The site has both English and German versions and a comprehensive, searchable archive with details of all performances and recordings conducted by von Karajan, including cast lists, performance details, and press reviews.

  • Michael Black's Opera House Non-JC Link:  What makes this site unique is the inclusion of terrific little personal essays and longer technical writings by this young tenor. Also, of special interest are his recording recommendations, a very current list of links, a discussion of recent recordings and a fun bit of sleuthing which lists the unannounced future Met seasons.

  • Mike Richter's Opera Notes Non-JC Link:  A personal site with a wealth of knowledge and opinions on opera. Contains audio clips and explains Mike's "Audio Encyclopedia", an ongoing audio resource in the making.

  • Northwest Opera Schedules Non-JC Link:  If there is any question as to whether opera is a healthy art form in North America, this site should settle the issue. Schedules for companies from Boise to Anchorage can be found here along with many other links of interest to opera lovers.

  • Operabase Non-JC Link:  An astonishingly huge opera resource, providing news and reviews, a searchable data base of schedules and links. Many sections available in multiple languages.

  • Operastuff Non-JC Link:  A great site of links. Unique in that it leans toward providing information to and about singers.

  • Operaglass Non-JC Link:  A great resource because of the "Operaglass List" to which people around the world have contributed their opera synopses, libretti, performance histories and much else. Also contains many links.

  • Operissimo Non-JC Link:  A very professional data base of operas, performers, houses and composers. Quite complete. Contains an opera schedule.

  • Peralada Festival Non-JC Link:  In 1988, José Carreras sang one of his first concerts after his recovery from leukemia at this annual music festival in Girona, Spain. He returned there in 1989 to sing in Medea with Montserrat Caballe and in 1990 to sing a concert, again with Caballe. He returns on July, 15, 2000, in a concert with Jaume Aragall. This site, available in English as well as Spanish, is beautifully laid out with many photographs from past performances and further information about the festival.

  • Pronouncing Dictionary of Operas and Composers Non-JC Link:  When discussing opera, do you sort of muffle your words hoping no one will notice that you don't have the slightest idea how to really pronounce the names? If so, visit this site, and never mumble again.

  • Pucciniana Non-JC Link:  An excellent, easy to navigate site (in English) about Puccini and his operas.

  • Tom Kaufman's Opera Page Non-JC Link:  A personal page that has grown into a major resource. Lots of links and information, especially on tenors.

  • Tosca's Rome Non-JC LinkTosca, opera's most famous leaper from parapets and recipient of sweet kisses and slow caresses was 100 years old on January 14, 2000, as were the evil Scarpia and the handsome Cavaradossi. In commemoration of the centenary of the premiere of Puccini's Tosca, a conference will be held in Rome in June 2000. This interesting site has a discussion board, information about the conference, a plot summary of the opera, and details about a new book about the opera in its historical setting. Hear José Carreras sing the famous tenor arias from Tosca.

  • Verdi Festival Foundation Non-JC Link:  January 27, 2001 marks the 100th anniversary of Verdi's death, and the Verdi Festival Foundation site has done him proud. There is a wealth of information here, including a 'virtual Verdi museum'. The site's main language is Italian, but many of its sections have English versions as well.

  • Verdiana Non-JC Link:  An excellent, easy to navigate site (in English) about Verdi and his operas.

  • Virtual Opera House Non-JC Link:  A really cool, witty introduction to opera by "Dave" who obviously passionately loves opera, but also thinks it's supposed to be fun.

  • WWW Classical Music Library Non-JC Link:  A searchable, comprehensive and well organized set of links for both opera and classical music.. It is organized into 7 sections: Biographical information; Organizations, academic and commercial; Online periodicals; Reference; Reviews/program announcements/broadcast information; Computer software; Discussion forums.
