Sound Recordings Review-- Verdi: Rigoletto
By Desmond Arthur

José Carreras (Duke), Patricia Wise (Gilda), Louis Quilico (Rigoletto), New York City Opera/ Julius Rudel--Legato 843 [2CD] 116 minutes

Carreras made his debut with the NYCO in 1972 and sang with that company for a couple of years; this Rigoletto was taped April 22, 1973. It's a lively performance and the sound is not bad, though the orchestra is sometimes a bit loud and the taper's seat mates are obstreperbus in their applause. Rudel sets vigorous tempos, and the company singers and chorus are in fine form. Carreras's tenor, at age 27, was a lovely instrument: sweet toned, smoothly produced, with an effortless top. He phrases his arias beautifully and well deserves the audience's shouted "Bravos". Patricia Wise was a reliable house soprano, and though her singing hadn't much character, her coloratura technique was sound. Quilico was a stalwart at NYCO early in his career, and on this occasion he seemed determined to give his all in one of his greatest roles. He over-acts outrageously, but his singing is grand and glorious. This release was obviously offered as a Carreras Collectible (his picture is on the cover, and his name is printed in large type), but it is a pretty good Rigoletto all round and a fine souvenir of the NYCO of 20 years ago.
