José Carreras Receives the award "Goldene Henne" in Berlin

Among the awardees, the German President Roman Herzog

On Wednesday 9th September, Mr. José Carreras received in Berlin the award "Goldene Henne" of the German Media. This prestigious award is been given for the fourth consecutive year.

The 3 Honour prizes of the Gala, celebrated at the Friedrichspalast of the German capital, are dedicated to value the life, politics and charity. Mr. José Carreras and Mr. Roman Herzog, President of Germany, were the outstanding awardees of the Gala. On Friday 11th September at 20.15h. the ceremony of the mentioned award is broadcast on the German TV Channels MRD and B1.

In the morning of the same day, Mr. Carreras opened the Day-Clinic Virchow in Berlin. The German José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation donated 4 million DM for the creation of the above mentioned health care centre. The funds were raised at the past three TV marathons broadcast at Christmas by the first channel of the German public television ARD with a total sum of a thousand DM raised in each occasion.

The centre will offer day-treatment for children diagnosed as of having leukaemia and similar diseases. Further resources have also been dedicated to finance four beds specially indicated for bone marrow transplant.

Among the many projects developed with the funds obtained in the TV marathons in Germany, there is to mention the creation of one of the most important European cord blood banks established in Düsseldorf and Barcelona. The Catalan cord blood bank has its seat at the Institute for Cancer Research of Hospital Duran i Reynals.
