Meeting José Carreras
By Alice Kell

It was Tuesday, May 12, 1992, 10:45 pm. in New York City.  I had just seen José give his only area recital at Carnegie Hall, and was waiting at the stage door.  The security guard said to keep it very brief.  I got in, got to the front of the line, and there he was...I remember the way he looked at me with those big, brown eyes, and a smile that could melt diamonds...As he signed my program, I blubbered something about how much I enjoyed the show.   He then shook my hand and said "Thank you.  Thank you very much" in his luscious Catalan accent.  His hands were as soft as a baby's.  As I walked to my car, I thought "This man has never washed a dish in his life, and he doesn't work on his own car!"  He probably doesn't remember, because he signed 3,000 autographs that night.  But I will never forget!
