José Carreras is said to ignite a stage (figuratively).   In San Diego California, it happened literally.   It was a unusually warm night in July 1993 with the hot Santa Ana winds blowing from the desert.   The warm night, the crowd and a poorly functioning air conditioner combined to make a very hot theater.   The stage doors were opened wide to provide welcome air.   However, the incoming breeze caused the curtain to billow into the floor lights setting the curtain on fire.   As a bemused tenor looked on, stagehands stomped out the smoldering curtain and the recital continued.
