Carreras in Recital--Tokyo, Japan, November 12, 1999
By Misa Doi

Since the perfect review has been already circulated (while I was exhaustedly sleeping), I write down my fragmentary impressions here.

JOSÉ'S VOICE:

Last night his voice was excellent. Strong, warm, soft and sometimes ringing sharp as a knife. It seems to me that his voice sounds younger than I heard two years ago at the same venue, or at least his voice has not been aged since then. I sat in the fourth row, I could see his spits forcefully spread from his mouth. That's the evidence.

PROGRAM:

Highlights are "Siete canciones populares espanolas" by Manuel de Falla. This composition is one of my favorites among José's recordings. So I was very excited when I found it included in the program. While he sang the series of seven songs, I felt his voice was gradually lighter and smoother and he successfully overcame this demanding tunes. This reminded me of his splendid performance in Salzburg 1989, which most of Carreras fans have seen in the video and I felt as if I had been there.

HIS LEG:

His sciatica seemed to be a little bit cured, comparing when I last saw him this July, He didn't show any painful expression. But when he received a lot of flowers, flowers, flowers, flowers, flowers, he quickly snatched them, standing straight, since he could not bend over. José, there are a lot of good spas, effective for sciatica in Japan!

I made sure that José is in very good shape, so I am really looking forward to the recitals and the concert to come.
