At the end of May, three days before I left for Barcelona, I unexpectedly found the CD of La Forza del Destino live from La Scala, June 1978, with Caballè, Cappuccilli, Ghiaurov, conducted by Patanè. And by an incredible coincidence, on the same day, after nine months of waiting and many complications, the video of the very same performance arrived from the USA.

In these recordings, Jose is something absolutely sublime. It is true that these were the marvelous years of his youth. There was the vigor of his full voice that reached all the high notes with an extreme facility and naturalness. But there was something more... Even better in the video than in the CD, what emerges is that thing that has always struck me about him. We have heard the great tenors, young and vigorous that came before him, and those that came after, Alagna, Cura, La Scola, Florez, etc. But no one, no one, has EVER awakened in me the same impressions, sensations and emotions that Jose knows how to bring alive.

Along with this, his appearance is beautiful, which brings joy to the eyes and a feeling of tenderness to the heart. The timbre, the diction, the musicianship are perfect. How he manages to express such sweetness with such vocal power is almost miraculous. But what is incredible, incredible because I have never encountered this in any other tenor, is the expressiveness that he gives to the character he is playing. In my opinion no one (not even Domingo) manages to convey the states of mind, all the emotions of the character like he does. His hand gestures are never out of place, never a moment of self- consciousness. Even the overall way he moves his body reflects the great involvement in his interpretation at the personal level, The spectator immediately notices this combination of things and is conquered by them.

Even in the moments in which the setting doesn't help, when there are no objects to handle or other people in the scene, he always manages to convey what is necessary with his singing, his expression and his gestures, because what he is interpreting does not SEEM to be happening, it actually IS happening before our very eyes. Perfectly in his element, how the young Jose shines in the midst of the two 'sacred monsters', Caballè and Cappuccilli!

At the time, he was 31 years old. Such an astounding performance, both vocal and dramatic marks a person who, without a doubt, was born with this art in his blood, because all these gifts cannot be learned to this level even after a 30 year career. Either one has them or one does'nt. And he already had them when he was 26 years old. I have never seen or heard anyone else, apart from him, who could arouse this combination of extremely beautiful and unforgettable feelings. The audience at La Scala was conquered by it. You should hear their delight! How long the applause and the bravos lasted! And with what intensity the audience exploded after holding it all back until the end of each of his scenes. It was truly like when someone finally releases a great emotion that they can no longer keep pent up inside them.

That a great part of the merit goes to his early vocation is true, but what one notices is that even now when he sings, one feels that he believes in what he is interpreting. From the very beginning until today, he has never succumbed to 'professional habit'. Boredom with singing the same things. Appearing on the stage because it is simply your job. No. He truly loves what he is doing. He believes in it still and he LIVES what he is singing.

I must say it again: in those years of his youth he had a voice of such beauty and perfection that it could arouse exclamations of amazement and pleasure. But even today, his extraordinary involvement in the interpretation of whatever he sings remains intact. And it is our great fortune that we have such a large number of his recordings available.

This is the outpouring of my soul, filled with beauty and gratitude to him. Gratitude to an ordinary person (no, he is perhaps a little more than ordinary) who provokes feelings so extraordinary and so pleasing that they have moved a 56 year old person to write her thoughts because they can no longer remain only in her ears, her mind, and her heart.

A few days ago, I read the message from Juan Pons on the 30th Anniversary of Josè's career debut. It seemed to me the most moving of all. With very few words, he paid Josè the most beautiful compliment of them all. By saying that it was not possible to praise him for only a single performance, he showed such a friendship between colleagues that I was astounded, and it gave me immense pleasure. I feel Pons has given to Josè a great and beautiful demonstration of esteem and affection.

A fine Maggio , tre giorni prima di partire per Barcelona, ho trovato inaspettatamente il CD de "La forza del destino" live dalla Scala con Caballè, Cappuccilli , Ghiaurov del giugno 1978 diretta da Patanè, e per una incredibile combinazione lo stesso giorno mi è arrivato dagli Usa, dopo 9 mesi di attesa e molti disguidi, la stessa identica performance ma in video.

In queste incisioni Josè è qualcosa di assolutamente sublime. E' vero che erano gli anni meravigliosi della giovinezza , c'era il vigore della voce piena che arrivava a tutte le note alte con una estrema facilità e naturalezza , ma c'è qualcosa di più.. Meglio ancora che nel CD, è nel video che risalta ciò che mi ha sempre colpito in lui. Di grandi tenori giovani , vigorosi e bravi ne abbiamo sentiti molti , prima di lui. E dopo di lui sono arrivati sono i vari Alagna, Cura, La Scola, Florez ecc. Ma nessuno, dico: nessuno, MAI ha suscitato in me le stesse impressioni, le sensazioni, le emozioni che Josè sa far vivere.

Intanto è bellissimo d'aspetto. Il che è una gioia per gli occhi, e una tenerezza per il cuore. Il timbro, la dizione, la musicalità sono perfetti . Come riesca ad esprimere la dolcezza pur con tanta potenza vocale desta meraviglia. Ma quello che è incredibile, appunto perché non l'ho mai riscontrato in nessun altro tenore, e l'espressività che dà al personaggio. A mio parere nessuno (nemmeno Domingo) riesce a rendere gli stati d'animo, tutte le emozioni del personaggio come fa lui . I gesti delle mani, non sono mai fuori posto, mai un momento di imbarazzo. Persino i movimenti del corpo in generale sono una interpretazione di grande coinvolgimento a livello personale. Questo insieme di cose lo spettatore l'avverte immediatamente, e ne è conquistato. .

Anche nei momenti in cui la scenografia non aiuta , quando non ci sono oggetti da maneggiare o altre persone in scena, riesce sempre a fare col canto e l'espressione e i gesti , il necessario perché ciò che sta interpretando , non sembri, ma STIA realmente accadendo proprio in quell' istante, sotto i nostri occhi. Perfettamente a suo agio , come brilla il giovane Josè tra i due mostri sacri Caballè e Cappuccilli !

A quell'epoca aveva 31 anni. Una così stupefacente resa vocale e scenica in un ragazzo così giovane è indice di una persona che è già indubbiamente nata con questa arte nel sangue. Perché tutte queste doti non si possono imparare e rendere a questo livello neanche in 30 anni di carriera. O si hanno o non si hanno. E lui le possedeva già a 26 anni. Io non ho mai visto e sentito nessuno, oltre lui, che suscitasse questo insieme di bellissime e incancellabili sensazioni. Il pubblico della Scala ne era conquistato. Bisogna sentire che entusiasmo!. Quanto a lungo durano gli applausi e i bravo, e con quale intensità scoppiano dopo essere stati trattenuti a stento sino alla fine di ogni sua scena.

Proprio come quando ci si libera finalmente di una grande emozione che non è più possibile contenere dentro di sè.

Il fatto che gran parte del merito vada alla sua precoce vocazione va bene, ma quello che si nota è che, ancora adesso quando canta, si sente che crede in ciò che sta interpretando. Dall'inizio sino ad ora, in lui non è mai subentrata l'abitudine alla professione. La noia di cantare sempre le stesse cose. L'esibirsi in palcoscenico solo perché è il suo mestiere. No. Lui ama veramente ciò che fa. Ci crede ancora e VIVE quello che canta. Lo devo ripetere : in questi anni giovanili ha una voce di una bellezza e di una perfezione da suscitare esclamazioni di stupore e soddisfazione. Ma ancora oggi resta intatta la sua straordinaria partecipazione nell' interpretare con tutto il suo essere ciò che canta. E la nostra fortuna consiste nel fatto che abbiamo a disposizione un grandissimo numero di sue incisioni.

Questo è lo sfogo della mia anima, riempita di bellezza e di gratitudine da lui. Da una essere normale (no, lui è un poco più che normale... ) che dà sensazioni così straordinarie e gratificanti da spingere una persona di 56 anni a mettere per scritto i suoi pensieri perché solo nelle orecchie , nella mente e nel cuore non ci stanno più.

Qualche giorno fa ho letto il messaggio di Juan Pons sui 30 anni di carriera di Josè. E mi è sembrata la cosa più commovente tra quelle che abbiamo scritto noi. Dicendo solo poche parole, lui ha fatto a Josè i complimenti più belli Dicendo che non era possibile elogiarlo per una singola performance ha dimostrato una tale amicizia tra colleghi che mi ha stupito, e che mi ha fatto immensamente piacere . Comunque penso che Pons abbia dato a Josè una grande, bellissima dimostrazione di stima e amicizia.
