Samson et Dalila--Barcelona, Spain, March 27 & 30, 2001
By Yvonne Stillhard

A short review - a few thoughts...

I had the privilege to attend the March 27th and 30th Samson et Dalila performances. Before leaving Geneva I prayed that Mr. Carreras would feel healthy enough to sing. Since I had read the reviews of the first performances I had mixed feelings as far as staging and lighting are concerned. I decided to ignore the negatives and just focus on what I adore, the singers and the music and I was rewarded.

Mr. Carreras' interpretation was just breathtaking. He was in very fine voice both evenings. He raised his level of intensity and energy with every act.

I do not understand the so-called opera critics who see in Samson's power just a sort of bodybuilder or "Rambo". Power means for them just physical, tall and heavyweight. Why not accept a different approach of this role ! Samson's power can be spirituality, intellect, dignity, subtlety, intuition, sensitivity, intensity, vitality and energy.

Mr. Carreras has got all this, that's why I consider him perfectly suited to interpret Samson - contrary to what some critics pretend.

I do not want to be unfair towards singers but, in my opinion, Markella Hatziano's interpretation of Dalila was not very successful. She could not express feelings, at least they did not pass the stage. Those of you who have seen Agnes Baltsa in this role will understand. She is the perfect Dalila.

Simon Estes as High Priest was excellent - vocally wonderful, so was the Hebreu Stefano Palatchi.

A big compliment to the excellent choir, the same is valid for the orchestra and the conductor. The musicians never covered the singers. I think the conductor knows the singers' needs.

I appreciated less the choreography of the ballet - somewhat "kitschy".

All in all, two enjoyable evenings at the Liceu !
