ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

José Carreras gave this interview on Italian television (Canale 5) on 23 June 1996. He was in Rome to give a benefit concert for the JCILF and to receive the Cavaliere di Gran Croce della Repubblica Italiana. Laura's commentary appears in [ ]'s.

[José is seated on a small sofa in the television studio, with the public seated in the audience section and up in the gallery. Maurizio Costanzo is by his side sitting on a tall stool. José is smiling, relaxed, full of fun and in his element. He chats without self-consciousness, every once in a while repeating the beginnings of words, as he often does.]

Costanzo : Did you watch the Juventus game last night?

Josè: First of all, let me say congratulations to all the Juventus fans, to the Italians, who deserved their win. I have to say that, for the little that I understand about football - I always go when I can - in the championship, the European Cup, as it's called now, Ajax played better. However, last evening, Juventus was without doubt the superior side. They were extraordinary in the penalty shots, but in my view, they shouldn't have even had to go to penalties, they deserved to win before. [At this point, some members of the audience immediately hold up their football scarves with the colours and symbol of Juventus, and José starts laughing]

Costanzo : What other passions do you have besides football?

Josè: Well, music. Music isn't only a profession. I've always said that music is like literature. I've thought that there is a kind of music for every occasion. It depends on the circumstances and the person's state of mind.

Costanzo: What are you reading at the moment?

Josè: I'm reading a book by a Spanish author, Sanchez Ferlosio - El Jarama. I had read it 20 years ago. It's a classic of Spanish literature, and now it attracts me even more than it did then. I find it more interesting.

Costanzo: Because 20 years have passed. You've changed. You're more mature.

Josè: Probably, probably!

Costanzo: I think that the Italians think of you as very Italian.

Josè: That would give me great pleasure because Italy is the country so close to my heart. I truly began my professional career here as a consequence of my debut in Parma. In the last 20, 22 years I have sung here very often and I have always felt the affection and warmth of the Italians, and I feel very close to you.

[Applause. José's words were often underlined by the audience's applause earlier in the interview as well. Costanzo recalls that earlier they had been talking about how leukemia had struck him while he was filming La Boheme and says good-naturedly: "I'm going to take advantage of the friendship you've shown me. It's unpardonable to ask...but...how does 'Che gelida manina' go?" Costanzo continues to pretend to be embarrassed: "One who asked Carreras to..." Amused, José laughs and immediately says: "It goes something like this" and he begins to sing, with an inspired look on his face: "Che gelida manina, se la lasci riscaldar, cercar che giova, al buio non si trova". Then he stops singing and says "then comes that really beautiful part." His words are again almost drowned out by applause. He smiles. Constanzo 'apologizes': "I don't think this has ever happened to me before. Here I am with a tenor like Carreras and I ask him 'How does it go?'"]

Josè: But there are also beautiful things on the record I've just made. I've recorded an album with certain pieces of classical music, by composers like Chopin, Albinoni, Brahms. We've added words and I've sung them. It was a pleasure to sing them. Because they are pieces that ever since I was a boy, I said: what a pity they can't be sung. For example, there's the famous 'Tristesse' by Chopin. I was inspired by a record by Giuseppe di Stefano, - let me take this opportunity to say that he has been and is my favourite tenor - and he sang it. It went like this... [and José sings again] E' triste il mio cuor, senza di te, che sei lontana e più non pensi a me, dimmi perchè..... [he stops singing, smiles and says: "But there's music as well on the record." More applause]

Costanzo: Another thing, Carreras, you know that all of us, at certain times of the day sing to ourselves. Now I ask myself: But Carreras, him, what does he do? Does he croon too? Well, he can't croon, but surely it's not possible that he only sings arias to himself. So, you sometimes sing something to yourself, no?

Josè: [laughing] Of course! Like everyone else... excuse me, for being a bit 'intimate' here... in the shower. It's logical for us to sing, but not necessarily operatic pieces. Well, I sing.... [he tries to think quickly of something] The first thing that comes into my head.... [he starts to sing] I did it my way... I don't know. Oh. A piece. A piece... [he starts to sing an Italian song] E' notte alta e sono sveglio, tutum, turum... whatever comes into my head. But then after 2 or 3 minutes I stop because I get bored.

[José laughs and gestures with his hands. Costanzo thanks him for the great pleasure of seeing him again, and for the way he has talked to him as a friend. He urges the public to attend the concert. The audience applauds. Then José smiles, stands up, nods in salute, waves a thank you to the audience, and leaves the stage while the audience, all on their feet now, continue to applaud. In 2 days, Carreras was interviewed on 3 different television channels. I have to say, that in that moment he was very handsome. So tranquil and relaxed. His smile was truly serene. It was not the same smile that he has in his concerts, where you can always see a bit of tension]

Costanzo: "Lei ha seguito la partita Juventus-Aiax ieri sera"

Josè: "Bisogna dire innanzi tutto: congratulazioni a tutti gli Juventini, agli italiani, che hanno meritato di vincere. Bisogna dire, per quel poco che capisco di calcio, vado sempre quando posso; nel campionato, l'European Cup, come lo chiamano adesso, l'Aiax ha giocato meglio, ma ieri sera la Juventus è stata senz'altro molto superiore. Perchè hanno lanciato i rigori.in modo straordinario. Secondo me, non dovevano neanche arrivare ai rigori, meritavano di vincere prima. [Dal pubblico hanno alzato delle sciarpe con i colori e il simbolo della Juve , e lui si è messo a ridere di gusto]

Costanzo: "Che altre passioni ha lei oltre al calcio ?"

Josè: "Be, la musica. La musica non è solo la professione. Io ho sempre detto che la musica è come la letteratura. Ho sempre pensato che c'è una musica per ogni occasione, dipende dalle circostanze e dallo stato d'animo di una persona."

Costanzo: "Cosa sta leggendo in questo momento?"

Josè: "Sto leggendo un libro di un autore spagnolo Sanchez Ferlosio: El Jarama che avevo letto 20 anni fa. E' un classico della letteratura spagnola, ed ora mi interessa ancora più di una volta. Lo trovo più attraente."

Costanzo: "Perchè sono passati 20 anni . Lei è cambiato, è più maturo"

Josè: "Probabilmente, probabilmente!"

Costanzo: "Credo che gli italiano la sentano molto italiano"

Josè: "Mi farebbe molto piacere perchè io considero l'Italia un paese che mi sta a cuore. Ho cominciao veramente la mia carriera pofessionale a Parma, il mio debutto a Parma in conseguenza. Negli ultimo 20, 22 anni ho cantato spessissimo e ho sentito sempre l'affetto e il calore degli italiani, e io mi sento molto vicino a voi."

[Applausi . Anche in precedenza , spesso le parole di Josè sono state sottolineate dagli applausi del pubblico Costanzo ricorda che poco prima avevano parlato dell'inizio della malattia mentre Josè girava Boheme e dice, con un modo bonario :" Io approfitto della simpatia che lei mi dimostra. E' imperdonabile chiederglielo ...ma... come fa la gelida manina? Continua fingendo imbarazzo - "...uno che chiede a Carreras...." Josè ride divertito e subito dice: "Fa qualcosa così come..." e si mette a cantare, con la faccia ispirata :"Che gelida manina, se la lasci riscaldar, cercar che giova, al buio non si trova" Smette di cantare e aggiunge: "e poi viene quel pezzo bellissimo...." le sue parole sono coperte dagli applausi. Lui sorride. Costanzo si scusa : "Io credo che non sia mai successo, uno ha un tenore come Carreras e gli chiede come fa."]

Josè: "Però anche nel disco che ho fatto ci sono belle cose . Ho inciso un disco dove ci sono certi pezzi di musica classica, di compositori come Chopin, Albinoni, Brahms. Abbiamo messo il testo e le ho cantate, ho avuto il piacere di cantarle. Perchè sono pezzi che fin da ragazzo mi dicevo: peccato non poterle cantare. C'è per esempio la famosa Tristesse di Chopin, io mi sono ispirato al disco di Giuseppe di Stefano, -approfitto per dire che lui è stato, ed è il mio tenore preferito - e lui cantava e faceva così : [si mette di nuovo a cantare] "E' triste il mio cuor, senza di te, che sei lontana e più non pensi a me, dimmi perchè..". [smette di cantare, sorride, e dice: "ma sul disco c'è anche la musica." applausi]

Costanzo: "Senta un 'ultima cosa Carreras, lei sa che tutti n,oi in alcuni momenti della giornata, canticchiamo. Allora io mi chiedevo: ma Carreras, lui, che fa? Canticchia? Non può canticchiare, ma non è nemmeno che ogni volta possa partire con la romanza. Cioè, canticchierà anche lei qualcosa, no?"

Josè: [ride] "Ma certo !.. Come tutti.! Scusate, voglio essere un pò colloquiale ...in doccia . Logicamente noi cantiamo, e non necessariamente brani d'opera. Be', canto" [cerca di pensare velocemente a qualcosa] "la prima cosa che mi viene in mente." [e comincia a cantare] "I did it my way..... Non lo so! O un pezzo.. un pezzo.. E' notte alta e sono sveglio, tutum, turum... Quello che mi viene in mente... Poi dopo 2 o 3 minuti smetto perchè mi annoio..."

[Ride e muove le mani. Costanzo lo ringrazia per il grande piacere che ha avuto di rivederlo, e da come parla si capisce che gli è amico. Invita il pubblico ad andare al concerto ecc. ecc. La gente applaude. Josè sorride e si alza, piega il capo per salutare, alza un braccio per ringraziare ed esce mentre i pubblico, tutti si sono alzati in piedi , continua ad applaudire. Devo dire che in quei giorni era proprio bello. Così tranquillo e disteso. Il suo sorriso era veramente sereno. Non è lo stesso sorriso che ha ai concerti, dove si nota sempre un pò tensione.]
