JCarreras.com talks with the Italian pianist, Maestro Lorenzo Bavaj,
who has accompanied José Carreras in numerous recitals since their artistic
collaboration began in 1989.
Maestro Bavaj, how did you and José Carreras first meet?
Lorenzo Bavaj: I met José through Carlos Caballé - Montserrat's
brother - who was his manager at that time -1989 - and who happened to hear
me in a concert where my program was entirely devoted to Rossini's music.
What is the most difficult aspect of accompaniment?
Lorenzo Bavaj: The most difficult thing about accompaniment is to
establish a mutual understanding with whoever you are accompanying so that you
can create a final unified result. That is, two persons but a single musical
outcome. I think this outcome is difficult to achieve and requires a long
relationship and not just at the musical level.
We understand you give master classes both in Italy and Japan. What do
you find most rewarding about teaching these classes?
Lorenzo Bavaj: The aspect of teaching that gives me the most
satisfaction is the possibility of being in contact with young people who are
eager to learn and to whom I try to pass on all that the experience of over 800
concerts has taught me.
As a teacher, what is the most important advice you give your students?
Lorenzo Bavaj: What I can advise my students is always to continue studying
even when they think their studies have finished, because in music it is essential to
take every aspect of the music itself to the deepest possible level.
We know that you have a substantial career as a soloist and as a member of chamber
music ensembles. Are you planning to give any solo piano or chamber music recitals in the
near future? Any plans for new recordings?
Lorenzo Bavaj: I hope to appear either as a soloist or in chamber music
concerts for the friends of Carreras who ask me quite often to do this. I think it depends
only on when it is possible to organize these concerts, but I am always ready to consider
any proposal in this respect. As for new recordings, several months ago I completed "an
homage to Zanella", an important 20th century Italian composer. This recording has
recently come out on the Bongiovanni label.
You have said that you feel particularly honored by your election to the Accademia
dei Catenati in Macerata? Could you tell us a bit more about the Academy?
Lorenzo Bavaj: The Accademia dei Catenati is a very ancient institution that
brings together people from Macerata who are particularly distinguished in the arts. So
for me it has been a great honor to take part at such a young age.
When did you first begin studying piano? Do you come from a musical family?
Lorenzo Bavaj: I began to play the piano when I was eight years old, encouraged
by my father, who unfortunately died in 1986. He was a doctor - a pediatrician - but also
an excellent violinist and a man with a great passion for all kinds of music. It is to him
that I owe everything that I have accomplished in music.
We have heard that you have three children. Do they also play musical instruments?
Lorenzo Bavaj: Of my three children, the oldest, Valentina, is studying piano at
the Pesaro Conservatory. Isabella, who is twelve years old, is studying the violin. And the
third, Francesco, is too little for any instrument - he's fifteen months old.
Finally, Maestro Bavaj, if you could go back in time and accompany a great singer from
the past, who would it be?
Lorenzo Bavaj: If I could travel back in time, I would like to play for the great
Caruso. For me, the 'why' is self-evident!!!!!
Maestro Bavaj, la sua collaborazione con José Carreras ha incominciato nel
'89. Vero? Come vi siete conosciuti?
Lorenzo Bavaj: Ho conosciuto José attraverso Carlos Caballé (fratello
di Montserrat) che all'epoca era il suo manager (1989) e che aveva avuto modo di
ascoltarmi in concerto con un programma interamente rossiniano.
Per lei, qual' è l'aspetto più difficile nel ruolo di accompagnatore?
Lorenzo Bavaj: La cosa più difficile nell'accompagnatore è quella di stabilire
con chi si accompagna un'intesa che possa creare un risultato finale unico. Cioè due
persone per un solo risultato musicale. Credo che questo risultato sia difficile da
raggiungere e communque richiede un lungo affiatamento non solo musicale
Abbiamo letto che lei da i 'master class' in Italia e anche in Giappone.
Che aspetto del insegnamento le da più soddisfazione?
Lorenzo Bavaj: L'aspetto dell'insegnamento che mi da più soddisfazione
è la possibilità di stare a contatto con giovani desiderosi di imparare e ai quali
cerco di trasmettere tutto ciò che l'esperienza di oltre 800 concerti mi ha insegnato.
Come maestro, qual' è il consiglio più importante che lei da ai suoi studenti?
Lorenzo Bavaj: Quello che posso suggerire ai miei studenti è di continuare
sempre a studiare anche quando pensano che gli studi sono finiti perchè nel campo della
music è essenziale approfondire ogni aspetto della musica stessa il più possibile.
Sappiamo che lei ha una carriera molto solida da solista e che participa
anche nella musica da camera. Nel prossimo anno potremo sentire qualche concerto di
pianoforte o di musica da camera con Lorenzo Bavaj al pianoforte? E magari qualche
disco anche?
Lorenzo Bavaj: Spero di potermi esibire come solista o in concerti di musica
da camera per gli amici di Carreras che me lo chiedono spesso; penso che dipende solo
dalla possibilità di organizzare questi concerti, ma sono sempre disponibile a valutare
qualunque proposta in questo senso. Per quanto riguarda i dischi è da poco uscito un
"omaggio a Zanella" (un importante compositore italiano del '900, disco che ho realizzato
per la casa Bongiovanni qualche mese fa.
Abbiamo letto che lei considera la sua elezione all'Accademia dei Catenati di
Macerata un' onore di cui lei è particolarmente fiero. Potrebbe dirci un po' di più su
questa accademia?
Lorenzo Bavaj: L'Accademia dei Catenati è una istituzione molto antica che
riunisce personaggi maceratesi che si sono distinti in modo particolare nel campo delle
arti; è stato quindi per me un grande onore far parte in giovane età.
Quando ha incominciato suonare il pianoforte? Viene da una famiglia 'musicale'?
Lorenzo Bavaj: Ho incominciato suonare il pianoforte a otto anni spinto in
questo da mio padre che era medico (pediatra) ma anche un ottimo violinista e un grande
appassionato di tutti i generi musicali: devo a lui (purtroppo scomparso nel 1986) tutto
quello che ho realizzato nella musica.
Abbiamo sentito che lei ha tre figli. Suonono anche loro qualche strumento?
Lorenzo Bavaj: Dei miei tre figli, la maggiore, Valentina studia pianoforte
al Conservatorio di Pesaro, Isabella (12 anni) studia violino, e il terzo, Francesco,
è troppo piccolo per qualsiasi strumento (ha 15 mesi)
E finalmente, Maestro Bavaj, se potesse viaggiare nel tempo e fare l'accompagnatore
di qualsiasi dei grandi cantanti del passato, chi lo sarebbe?
Lorenzo Bavaj: Mi piacerebbe suonare con il grande Caruso se potessi viaggiare nel
tempo. Il perchè mi sembra evidente!!!!!
